Writer's picture: Douglas GillanDouglas Gillan

DIME Method

•Step 1: Identify key concepts (e.g., key terms from text and major concepts in lecture notes)

•Step 2 (Define): Provide the definition that the text and/or lecture gives

•Step 3 (Interpret): Use your own terms to explain the concept

•Step 4 (Model): Link the concept to all of the other concepts for that lecture/module/chapter in a network

•Step 6 (Example): Provide an example from everyday life. This can be a metaphor or analogy

Example of a Model

Let’s say that you had to develop a model of the areas in Psychology:

•Learning

•Perception

•Social

•Developmental

•Biological

•Abnormal

•Personality

Draw in links to represent relations among concepts

•Not everything is related to everything else

•Think about how two concepts are related
